What is Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is a safe, non-surgical technique invented in 1952 by Dr. Michel Pistor, a French physician. The French Academy of Medicine has recognized Mesotherapy as a medical specialty since 1987. Through a series of multiple injections, medications are delivered directly into the mesoderm, the layer of fat and connective tissue found under the skin. Mesotherapy is a method of delivering medications directly to the area being targeted for treatment.
What types of problems can be treated with Mesotherapy?
Thousands of physicians all over the world have used Mesotherapy for more than fifty years to treat a wide variety of concerns including:
- Overall Weight Loss
- Spot Weight Reduction
- Cellulite Reduction
- Scar Revision
- Wrinkle Elimination
- Skin Rejuvenation
- Imperfections Left After Liposuction
- Hair Loss
- And more...
What is injected during Mesotherapy treatments?
Mesotherapy is a painless injection of medications, vitamins, and minerals obtained from
nationally recognized pharmaceutical companies in the United States.
Depending on the desired result, the area being treated, and the problem being addressed,
different ingredients are combined to create the various "cocktails" injected during treatments. For example, the formula used to melt fat deposits on the hips is different from that used to melt the fat deposits under the eyes. Still a different formula is used to treat the fat under the chin. Cellulite and facial rejuvenation treatments require a different combination of ingredients to acheive their desired results, as well.
How does Mesotherapy work to aid in weight loss and body sculpting?
The medications that are combined to make up the Mesotherapy cocktails work to melt the fat located just beneath the skin. The medications cause the membrane of the fat cell to break down and what remains is carried through the bloodstream and flushed out of the body through the kidneys and bowel.
How does Mesotherapy work to reduce Cellulite?
Cellulite affects the majority of post-pubescent women, so you are not alone! Being overweight does not cause the formation of cellulite, as many believe. Connective tissue present in the skin sometimes harden, holding down the skin and trapping the fat. This causes the dimpling appearance that characterizes the cellulite that appears on the hips, buttocks, and legs. The medications used in Mesotherapy injections release the connective tissue bands and melt the trapped fat, resulting in a smoother appearance, free of unattractive dimples.
Who is an appropriate candidate for Mesotherapy treatments?
Ideal candidates for Mesotherapy are healthy adults from 18 to 75 years of age.
Who should not consider Mesotherapy?
Patients with any of the following conditions are not candidates for Mesotherapy:
- Pregnancy
- Taking blood thinners
- Insulin-dependent diabetics
- A history of a stroke or blood clots
- Taking medication for heart arrhythmias
- Severe heart disease
- Cancer
Your medical history will be fully discussed during your pretreatment consultation. Please make sure Dr. Hadley is made aware of ANY medications you are taking.
How long does a treatment session take?
The actual injections usually take no more than 15-20 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. However, Dr. Hadley does not like to rush the process, preferring to make sure all questions have been answered, the treatment area is properly marked, and the patient is comfortable and relaxed. After the initial consultation, most patients can expect to spend approximately one hour from start to finish.
How many treatment sessions are required?
Many Mesotherapists use low-strength or homeopathic doses of medications in their injections, given 1 week apart over a period of 10-15 weeks. Dr. Hadley believes that higher concentrations of medications bring about faster results at a much lower cost. He prefers to "super-size" the strength of the formula and space treatments 3-4 weeks apart. Dr. Hadley finds that by using this method, only 3-4 treatments are required instead of 10-15. This results in a substantial savings, not only financially, but in time and discomfort, as well.
What is considered an "area" for treatment purposes?
Both sides of the body are considered together to form one area. For example:
- The outside of the thigh, both legs
- The inside of the thigh, both legs
- The abdomen below the navel, both sides
- The abdomen above the navel, both sides
- Love handles, both sides
- The back (bra bulge), both sides
- Backs of the upper arms, both sides
- Jowls, both sides of face
- Under chin, both sides
- Eye fat pads, both eyes
-
What types of side effects can be expected after a treatment?
While some people experience side effects to a lesser degree than others, most people can expect the following:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Itching
- Bruising
- General discomfort
A rare side effect of Mesotherapy is the formation of nodules. A small, pea-like hardening may appear under the skin. Usually only noticeable by touch, these formations are not serious and will dissolve by themselves, disappearing after a few weeks, or at most, months.
Is there a charge for the initial consultation?
There is no charge to determine if you are candidate for Mesotherapy. A $50 deposit is required at the time the appointment is scheduled to hold the consulation appointment time for you. This deposit will be applied to the charge for the treatment if you decide that Mesotherapy is right for you. You may also choose to apply the deposit to any other service or product available at Arthur Hadley Medicine. In the event that you can not make it to your appointment, you must reschedule with 48 hours notice or forfeit the deposit. (We ask for the deposit only to insure that, given the overall shortage of available appointments, consultation appointments are kept.)
During the initial consultation, Dr. Hadley will examine the area you wish to have treated and answer any questions you have about the treatment. If he feels that Mesotherapy can deliver the results you desire and wish to go forward with the treatments, you may elect to have the Mesotherapy treatment performed at that time, if an appointment is available. (Consultations are usually scheduled late in the day to help make sure there will be enough open time in the schedule to perform the treatment.) You may also elect to schedule the treatment for another time.
